ZTE's Nubia unveils first Android to challenge iPhone's MagSafe magnetic charging

The phone carries a 6.67-inch AMOLED display with an FHD+ resolution and refresh rate of 144Hz. As we told you earlier this month, the 4nm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 is under the hood (that’s the follow up to last year’s Snapdragon 888 chipset with Qualcomm’s new naming convention), and the device is equipped with up to 16GB of LPDDR5 RAM and 1TB of storage.

The rear camera array features a 64MP Sony IMX787 camera sensor behind a 35mm lens. A 50MP camera sensor drives the ultra-wide lens, and an 8MP sensor is in back of the periscope telephoto lens which delivers 5x optical zoom. Selfies and video chats are handled by a front-facing punch-hole camera lens backed by a 16MP camera sensor.

Keeping the lights on this phone is a large 5000mAh battery that will charge at 80W with a wired charger. This is the first Android handset to feature a magnetic charging platform similar to the iPhone’s MagSafe. This magnetic charging is available on the “Gravity Edition” of the Nubia Z40 Pro which happens to be a limited edition. The battery on the latter model has a smaller capacity of 4600mAh with a wired charging speed of 66W and a magnetic charging speed of 15W.

The “Gravity Edition” of the phone is priced at 4,299 yuan (equivalent to approximately $680). Despite having a larger battery, the basic edition of the Nubia Z40 Pro with 8GB of memory starts at 3,399 yuan (roughly $538).
