Yuri on Ice Film: Fans’ Hopes Dwindle After MAPPA CEO’s Comments

The Yuri on Ice film has been a hot topic of discussion among fans for years now, and the latest news from MAPPA has only served to fuel the fire. In a recent interview with Japanese music magazine Kompass (via @yoi_updates on Twitter), the CEO of MAPPA, Manabu Otsuka, stated that the primary reason why the project isn’t being worked on is the lack of revenue generated by this series.

Otsuka talked about the difficulty of running an animation studio in Japan and the limitations that come with running a studio that only creates anime. He mentioned Yuri on Ice, which MAPPA produced. Despite being a hit, the money coming into the studio was minimal:

“Take, for instance, Yuri on Ice, which we produced, and it turned out to be a massive hit. However, the revenue that came back to the studio, when compared to the results, was quite modest. I felt that as a studio, which has been operating under this structure for so long, we also have a responsibility. It made us realise that we need to expand our horizons and take on more responsibilities ourselves. After all, hit works can’t be manufactured on demand, so if we want the company to grow, we have to make the most of the limited opportunities we get.”

Naturally, this news has come as a disappointment to fans who have been eagerly awaiting the film for years. The 12-episode Yuri on Ice anime came out in 2016, and an original film titled Yuri on Ice the Movie: Ice Adolescence was announced a year later. While it was first slated to release in 2019, it got delayed, and fans have been waiting since.

Many are also disappointed with the fact that the comments are seemingly brushing off Yuri on Ice, which was the first series that made a significant impact before the studio took on shows like Attack on Titan and Jujutsu Kaisen. However, some are still holding on to hope, as MAPPA has not officially announced that the project has been cancelled.
