SAVING money on fuel is at the forefront of British drivers’ minds at the moment.

The cost of living has risen dramatically and a major factor is the price of fuel, which has made running a car a burden for many.

We spoke to Michelin, who said that the condition and type of the tyres you have fitted to your motor will make a huge difference.

In fact, it could help you save £100s a year in fuel and mean you travel further between fill-ups.

With the move to electric cars, Michelin is focused on making tyres that will get the most from each charge too.

Speaking to The Sun, Cyrille Roget, Michelin group technical and scientific communication director said: “Our data shows that you can expect a 10% improvement in range compared to a standard tyre.

“This equates to 25 additional miles for a vehicle that travelled 250 miles on non-EV-specific tyres.

“Rolling resistance is responsible for 20% of the fuel you use in a petrol or diesel car but also a part of the energy consumption in an electrical vehicle.”

Put simply, if the tank of your petrol car is costing you £100 at the moment, £20 of that is taken up by the rolling resistance of your tyres.

Clearly, there has to be some rolling resistance on any tyre, but making sure your tyres are in good condition and of the correct type is extremely important in saving fuel and money.

Roget continued: “An improved tyre for EVs improves range twice. Once, with a better efficiency during normal acceleration and driving and second during regenerative braking.”

For petrol and diesel cars, Michelin recommends choosing tyres that have ‘fuel economy’ as one of their main characteristics.

It says: “Tyres that have ‘traction’ as their main characteristic will often have reduced fuel economy. Winter tyres and tyres for heavier vehicles such as SUVs and light trucks might not be the most fuel-efficient.”

Roget went on: “We have developed specific ranges to provide the best possible experience to our consumers and users of electrical vehicles, by delivering tyres that combine different innovations.

“Those innovations help reduce the noise coming from the tyres inside the vehicle, have very high energy efficiency, long tread life, the load capacity to carry the extra weight and improved handling technologies.”
