Amongst the sheer hell that was the Covid pandemic, the silver lining was that WFH has become the norm(ish).

And countries all around the world have used this to their advantage – offering nomad visas to attract foreigners to their shores.

From Bail to Spain, if you’re lucky enough to have a remote working setup, you can apply for a nomad visa, which usually allows you to live in the country, as long as you’re working for a company based elsewhere.

And now, Canada is the latest set to join the list.

Details of the specific Canadian scheme haven’t been announced yet – including which industry’s workers would be eligible – but it’s likely they’ll be similar to other nomad visa offerings.

In Italy for example, the ‘nomadi digitali’ allows those ‘who carry out highly qualified work activities through the use of technological tools… to work remotely, autonomously or for a company that is not resident in the territory of the Italian state.’

Canadian visa laws are already quite favourable to digital nomads – even on a visitor visa, remote workers can currently work for up to six months in the country.

The idea is that by encouraging remote workers to move to Canada, they may fall in love with the North American country, and decide to stay there more permanently and, crucially, start seeking out job opportunities based there too.

It’s all part of the country’s bid to target tech workers, and become a global leader in the field.

So if the land of the Mounties and Niagara Falls has always been at the top of your bucket list, now’s the perfect chance to live your dream.
