Yankees’ Josh Donaldson, Jonathan Loaisiga head to injured list in wave of roster moves

BALTIMORE — The Yankees announced a slew of roster moves that included their infield taking an expected hit and their bullpen absorbing an unexpected setback.

Before Saturday’s game against the Orioles, the Yankees officially moved Josh Donaldson to the 10-day injured list with a hamstring strain — a move manager Aaron Boone called “likely” a day prior — and lost Jonathan Loaisiga to the 15-day injured list with right elbow inflammation.

Tommy Kahnle, who has been on the IL with right biceps tendinitis, was transferred to the 60-day injured list.

The roster machinations made space for the Yankees to recall Saturday starter Jhony Brito from Triple-A Scranton and bring up outfielder Willie Calhoun, who had not previously been on the 40-man roster.

Boone said Friday he did not believe Donaldson would be out long, but they wanted to be careful with the third baseman who pulled up lame while running to first base in Wednesday’s game.

“There’s enough in [his right hamstring] that it might knock him down for four or five days,” Boone said. “We’re going to likely be cautious.”

Loaisiga’s IL stint is backdated to April 6.

The valuable righty reliever has allowed one run in 3 ⅓ innings this season, and the injury appears to shed additional light on Boone’s bullpen management in Friday’s loss at Camden Yards.

The Yankees turned to Jimmy Cordero over more proven options such as Loaisiga in a tie game in the seventh inning.

After Cordero allowed two go-ahead runs, Boone said he liked the matchup of the righty Cordero against the bottom of the Baltimore order, which was righty-heavy.

Calhoun, a 28-year-old with six seasons of major league experience, had a strong spring training before he was sent to Triple-A.

It is possible the corner outfielder could see time if Oswaldo Cabrera, who is among the options at third base with Donaldson out, gets more reps in the infield.
