Y-20 Pre-event Seminar 2023: Nature is God, God is Nature; says Padma Shri Jadav Payeng – Times of India
Guwahati: “Eka Brikhya Dasa Putra Sama” is an idea worth ruminating and should be internalized and executed into action in the best possible way by doing nothing but, planting trees as much as possible, said Padma Shri Jadav Payeng.
He was speaking at Y-20 (under G-20 Summit) pre-event seminar on “Climate Change and Disaster Risk Reduction: Making Sustainability a Way of Life” held at Nowgong College (Autonomous) on Thursday.
He insisted that concepts like environment, its protection, climate change and its dubious impacts on the earth, pollution, scarcity of various resources, sustainability and so on related to the health of the Mother Earth needs to be introduced to the students through their textbooks right from their school days in India.
“The earth needs to be preserved and sustained through our actions, not destroyed and devastated. Now, what is biodiversity, why do we need to protect them, what is their role in making the earth a place suitable for the living of human beings etc. are some not so very uncommon or unknown ideas to us, “Payeng said.
Continuing its Y20 pre-events activities under G20 Summit 2023, the Nowgong College (Autonomous) organized the seminar where Payeng, known as the Forest Man of India, participated the seminar as keynote speaker.
He rued that due to the developmental works and projects, most of the rural areas have started suffering and losing a great portion of its biodiversity. “Students are informed about the need of protecting the environment, but no practical methods are promoted among them to actually get engaged with protection of the environment. Students are not fully blamable as the teachers are also not practically well educated, ” he said.
Payeng said even as many botany professors seem to know the theoretical names of the trees, they don’t identify the trees in the real world.
“Some unplanned developments have led to many troubles like the conflict between human and elephants and monkeys, even tigers in many places. Covid-19 has shown us how equal we all are as the highest intellectual living animal on earth despite having the labels of being rich or poor from the financial point of view,” he said.
Payeng noted that the pandemic has taught many lessons to relook at life and the environment.
The proceedings of the inaugural function of the daylong seminar was initiated by Dr. Bhuban Ch. Chutia, Coordinator, IQAC of Nowgong College (Autonomous). Dr. Sarat Borkataki, Principal of Nowgong College (Autonomous) welcomed the guest and participants. Dr. Borkataki explained the importance of Y-20 G-20 at this hour and also explained the importance of the topic chosen for the seminar.
More than five hundred students, research scholars and faculty members participated the seminar and interacted with Payeng and three research Ph.D. Scholars of Nowgong College (Autonomous) presented their papers.
As a part of Y-20 pre events a group of students conducted awareness programme on G-20 in neigbouring schools of Nowgong College (Autonomous).
