Phil Spencer, Microsoft’s Xbox chief, has reportedly said in an interview with The Wrap that Xbox Series X|S console shortage could continue well into 2022, as per a report by Video Games Chronicle. He said that the global chip shortage wasn’t the only thing bogging the console shipments and that there are “multiple kinds of pinch points” when it comes to assembling, packaging and shipping the Xbox Series X|S consoles.
“I think it’s probably too isolated to talk about it as just a chip problem,” he reportedly said in the interaction. “When I think about, what does it mean to get the parts necessary to build a console today, and then get it to the markets where the demand is, there are multiple kind of pinch points in that process. And I think regretfully it’s going to be with us for months and months, definitely through the end of this calendar year and into the next calendar year.”
Spencer added that the disappointment which the fans may feel due to the unavailability of consoles is the most disappointing thing for the company but they are working hard to alleviate the issue and that’s it is going to be a challenge.
The PlayStation5 is also going through similar issues. Sony recently introduced a new PS5 model with some design changes to the previous one like a smaller heatsink and different fans. The console makers have been running low on stocks for well over a year and a half now. The coronavirus pandemic gave a major boost to the gaming industry and the demands for gaming hardware rose steeply, which when combined with the more recent chip shortage, didn’t fare well for a large number of potential buyers.
