WWE star Charlotte Flair blasts nepotism critics and defends dad Ric’s legacy
The SmackDown Women’s Champion, who will defend her gold against 2023 Royal Rumble winner Rhea Ripley at WrestleMania 39 next weekend, addressed the match and her spot in the business as part of Friday night’s show.
She insisted she doesn’t fear the Judgment Day star, she respects her, noting she has the same respect for the likes of Ronda Rousey, Sasha Banks, Nikki and Brie Bella, Trish Stratus, Becky Lynch and anymore.
She also referenced her own insecurities, and called out the crowd as they started to do the infamous ‘what’ chant, punctuating the end of each sentence.
The Queen immediately fired back: ‘Are you really what-ing me? This is important to me, so listen!’
Charlotte then moved on to the idea of nepotism, with the audience immediately responding with her father Ric Flair’s legendary ‘wooooooo’ catchphrase.
She continued: ‘That’s right, Vegas. I love my dad. And I will never apologise for continuing the greatest legacy in sports entertainment.
‘And whether you like it or don’t like it, you better learn to love it because diamonds are forever, and so is Charlotte Flair!’
While the champ has a huge match at WrestleMania, her father with also be on hand over the weekend as the Nature Boy is set to induct The Great Muta into the WWE Hall of Fame on Friday, March 31.
When it comes to honouring her father’s legacy, Charlotte – who has held 14 world championships across Raw, SmackDown and NXT since her debut in 2013 – knew she would always be connected to him, but she never planned to incorporate his strut, ‘wooooo’, music or gowns in her own act.
Speaking exclusively to Metro.co.uk back in 2020, she said: ‘When I first started, I wasn’t allowed to “wooo”, do the figure four, nothing was supposed to be associated with my dad.
‘And then at NXT Takeover against Natalya [in 2014], I won the NXT women’s championship. That day, I debuted my music which had his music in it, and I “woooed” for the first time. It just happened organically because my dad was at ringside, but that was never something I set out to do…
‘It wasn’t wanting to continue the legacy, it just happened. How do you ignore the fact that your father is Ric Flair?’
