Uncle Howdy attacked Bobby Lashley from behind as the All Mighty’s rivalry with Bray Wyatt took an unexpected twist.

The idea of the Eater of Worlds facing Lashley at WrestleMania isn’t what WWE fans were expecting, but SmackDown certainly suggested we’re heading in that direction.

The former world champion came out to address Wyatt after his Muscle Man Dance mind games on Raw earlier in the week, but he didn’t quite get his wish.

Instead of the Firefly Fun House host – or any of his personas – it was Uncle Howdy who turned up, ambushing Lashley and attempting to lay him out.

He did start to fight back, but the lights cut out with the arena plunged into darkness as he started to gain the advantage.

When the lights came back on, Howdy was nowhere to be seen and Lashley didn’t look impressed at all.

While this isn’t the direction fans expected any of these stars to be going in for WrestleMania, this unexpected twist might be a sign of things clicking into place.

Uncle Howdy adds another wrinkle to proceedings and his appearance here shows that the mystery of his true identity is still a big part of the wider story, rather than a forgotten thread.

Lashley attempting to ignore the mind games is an understandable direction, even if he might need to start embracing the sinister side of the story and showing some fear to add a bit of drama as the feud heats up.

Despite the rivalry coming out of nowhere on screen, both men are talented enough to make it work and it’s a change from the work Lashley has been doing for the past few years.

There is plenty of time for twists and turns heading into WrestleMania, and this segment offered some intrigue as the weeks roll on.

WWE SmackDown airs Friday nights at 1am on BT Sport.
