WWE icon Billy Gunn, 59, teases retirement on AEW Collision after 34 year career
Billy Gunn left his boots in the ring after his loss on AEW Collision this week.
The Acclaimed battled the sinister group – which features Buddy Matthews, Brody King and Malakai Black – for their AEW Trios World Titles but fell short.
After the loss, Gunn sat and untied his boots, in silence before leaving them in the ring in emotional scenes as his teammates shook their heads and tried to get him to reconsider.
As many fans will know, a wrestler leaving their boots in the ring typically signals their retirement.
Gunn, who was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame as a member of iconic group D-Generation X in 2019, pushed past Caster and Bowens and walked straight up the ramp.
After the show, his sons Austin and Colten Gunn both took to social media to thank their father, as Austin wrote: ‘Hell of a run, Billy ????’
He later added: ‘all jokes aside, thank you for everything ???? never needed a big send off, never asked for anything, just went out there & had fun… And even though we haven’t seen eye to eye recently, we love you @RealBillyGunn #AEWCollision’
Also referencing recent storylines, Colten tweeted: ‘We aren’t on the best terms right now but thank you… no other words need to be said #AEWCollision’
Gunn himself – who has had various nicknames over the years including Mr. Ass, Bad Ass and more recently Daddy Ass – is yet to comment publicly since the gesture.
If this is it for him, he’s leaving behind an incredible legacy following a career spanning well over three decades including a King of the Ring crowd, an Intercontinental Title run and 11 stints as tag team champion in WWE alone.
Meanwhile, fans have been left absolutely devastated after the gesture came out of nowhere, with one person tweeted: ‘Damn Billy Gunn calling it quits kinda made me emotional.’
Another described the moment as ‘heartbreaking’, while a third person wrote: ‘If it is he has had an amazing career.’
‘Damn bro not gonna lie kinda in my feels about this man,’ a different viewer added, as someone else admitted: ‘I shed a tear ????’
Others have been left hoping it’s going to lead to an actual farewell run, with one fan tweeting: ‘I hope this is a storyline also but if not. Thank you for all you have done in wrestling sir.’
AEW Collision airs Saturday nights at 1am on Fite TV.
