Worst areas in Britain for roadworks as £12 billion is spent in the last year

THE WORST areas for roadworks have been revealed after reports suggest some £12 billion has been spent on them over the last year.

The results are broken down by council and the council with the most carried out more than 77,000 roadworks from 2021-2022.

The Bill Plant Driving School has revealed a study showing the top 10 councils in Britain.

The information was obtained after submitting a series of Freedom of Information requests to local authorities across the UK.

The area with more roadworks has been Essex County with a total of 77,423 roadworks carried out between 2021 and 2022, which came well ahead of second-place Staffordshire County with 52,871.

Cardiff was third – with 43,252 roadworks – followed by West Northamptonshire Council, which had 34,557.

The fifth most was East Riding of Yorkshire, with 32,420 roadworks, followed by Worcestershire County with 31,105.

In the north of England, Bradford City Council decided to go ahead with 27,301.

Some 25,593 roadworks were done in Ealing a residential area of West London.

Hampshire County, in the South East, carried out 25,581, while the 10th position was given to Leeds city with 24,851.

The research also revealed that the area with the least roadworks was the Isle of Anglesey with just 1,204.

Researchers sent out an FOI request to 130 local authorities asking for the total number of road and street works carried out during the 2021-22 financial year (April 2021 – March 2022).

They asked for road and street works carried out by the council themselves as well as third parties and statutory undertakers.

However, not all local authorities got back to them, and some local authorities either did not have the information or refused due to time constraints.
