World’s fastest EV breaks world record with eye-watering speed while in REVERSE

THE world’s fastest EV has broken the Guinness World Record with an eye-watering speed while driving in reverse.

Croatian-built Rimac Nevera entered “uncharted territory” by clocking 171.34mph backwards at the Automotive Testing Papenburg Centre in Germany.

The testing strip incidentally is also where the Nevera previously broke over 20 other acceleration and braking records in just one day -including the inane 256mph top-speed run.

Nevera’s ambitious feat has now shattered the previous record of 102.58mph which stood for 22 years and was set by a Caterham 7 Fireblade.

The record-breaking Nevera sported the signature green and black Time Attack edition livery, just as it did in its previous bunch on record runs.

Rimac’s test driver Goran Drndak, who took the EV on the record-breaking run, said: “You’re facing straight out backwards watching the scenery flash away from you faster and faster, feeling your neck pulled forwards in almost the same sensation you would normally get under heavy braking.”

Goran described how difficult and demanding it was to balance out every variable – from keeping the steering wheel firm, to being mindful of the braking point and keeping an eye on his speed.

Taking just 1.74 seconds to accelerate from 0-60 mph, The Rimac Nevera is the fastest production electric car in the world since 2021.

Producing an insane 1877bhp, the EV can reach a top speed of 256mph – thanks to the front and rear wheels having a single-speed gearbox each, allowing full torque to be applied left or right of each axle.

Rimac Nevera’s production is limited to just 150 units, making it one of the most sought-after hyperelectric cars.

The Croatian company produces 1 Nevera each week with a price tag of £1.7 m.

Recently, iconic SUV maker Jeep revealed it is gearing up for the future with a range of EVs on the horizon – and announced two of its leading cars are set to go all-electric.

Electrified versions of the legendary Wrangler and the Grand Cherokee are due to launch in the US next year.

Just a few days ago, car fanatic Neil Briscoe test-drove the “stupidly expensive” James Bond-style Rolls Royce Spectre which included clunky movie-star features.

Briscoe complimented the level of engineering and quality that went into making the stunning Bond-esque vehicle and described the Royce as “truly, truly remarkable”.
