Wonder Woman’s New Adversary is an Old Flame

Princess Diana’s fight against the new Shining Knight concluded in Wonder Woman #784, with her foe turning out to be a recent ally and love interest.

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Wonder Woman #784, on sale now from DC Comics.

Recent issues of Wonder Woman revealed a new version of an iconic member of the heroic Justice Society hero in a surprising new role. A new version of the medieval hero, the Shining Knight, came with a mysterious twist. Not only was his identity kept a secret but he was also working for one of Wonder Woman’s oldest enemies, the meddlesome psychic Dr. Edgar Cizko (aka Doctor Psycho).

After dealing with Image-Maker, Diana finished her duel with the Shining Knight in Wonder Woman #784 (by Michael W. Conrad, Becky Cloonan, Marcio Takara, Tamra Bonvillain and Pat Brosseau). Deadman gave her a helping hand by providing her with a sword from the Godsphere originally wielded by her friend, ally and love interest Siegfried, a Norse warrior from the afterlife of Valhalla.

It turns out that Dr. Cizko didn’t just choose just anyone to attack his arch-enemy. He made the confrontation personal by resurrecting one of Diana’s friends and turning him into his puppet who was unaware of their previous life. When the Knight saw Gram, the sword Sigfried gifted to Diana, it stirred something within him and gave him the strength to break free of Cizko’s hold began to break and the truth was revealed. The new Shining Knight was a friend from the Sphere of the Gods and the former owner of Diana’s sword, Siegfried himself.

Cizko was conducting telepathic experiments in Valhalla when Diana was there, in the place Sigfried resided after his death hundreds of years ago. Diana stopped Cizko with her friend’s help, and this appears to be the doctor’s twisted way on getting revenge on them both. However, the villain didn’t count on the gift that traveled with Wonder Woman from the Godsphere, the sword Gram, being able to snap the ancient warrior free of his control.

This is yet another example of comic book characters not staying dead, with Siegfried being resurrected from the Norse afterlife. However, it serves as a dark parallel to Wonder Woman’s most recent resurrection. Diana’s return from the Godsphere was made possible through her will to be a hero and her sacrifice of eternal peace. Siegfried’s resurrection, on the other hand, was much more insidious. Cizko used dark magic to revive him and made him forget who he once was. Whereas Wonder Woman returned to be the symbol she once was, but her companion returned to become the twisted opposite of everything he stood for when he fought alongside Diana.

Additionally, this demonstrates that Dr. Cizko’s mind games go beyond his powers and he is willing to manipulate people in other ways as well. If it wasn’t for the timely arrival of Deadman with the sword Gram, Wonder Woman may have unwittingly dealt a fatal blow against a dear friend.
