Wonder Woman Co-Writer Discusses the Murder of a Major DC Character

Trial of the Amazons launches in March, where a major DC character death will launch the seven-part crossover of warring Amazonian tribes.

DC’s upcoming Wonder Woman event, Trial of the Amazons, is set to kill off a major character with massive ramifications.

In a special edition of DC Nation, Michael W. Conrad and Becky Cloonan, co-writers of the current Wonder Woman ongoing series, teased details about the event and how it will be impacted by whoever is on the chopping block when the event launches in March. “A very significant character is going to die,” Conrad said. “It’s hard for me to even think about, because it’s a character that I care about so much.”

“Nothing’s going to be the same after this,” said Cloonan. Trial of the Amazons comes after a year of Wonder Woman-related titles and characters getting the spotlight, like Diana’s journey back to the main DC Universe, Hippolyta joining Justice League, Nubia serving as a queen in Nubia & the Amazons and newcomer Yara Flor interacting with new and other fan-favorite characters in Wonder Girl. Cloonan continued, “The emotional intensity and seeing all the characters reacting–‘This is real and it’s happening,’ I hope that people really like it.”

The event teams up writers, artists and members of every title’s creative team — Cloonan, Conrad, Vita Ayala, Stephanie Williams, Joëlle Jones, Elena Casagrande, Laura Braga and Skylar Patridge — for the seven-part story, which will see the three Amazonian tribes go to war with one another following the murder. Conrad has teased the gravity that this story will hold, saying, “You’re going to be along for this winding journey to find out who killed this character. We’re really going to break your heart.”

However, DC isn’t just kicking off one event with bookend issues come March 1, but two. The same day that Trial of the Amazons #1 releases, so will War For Earth-3 #1. While a little shorter than Trial of the AmazonsWar For Earth-3 will explore Amanda Waller’s plan for taking over the Crime Syndicate’s Earth, featuring two bookend titles as well and the crossing over of The FlashSuicide Squad and Teen Titans Academy series. The Crime Syndicate featured will also be the same team as 2021’s Crime Syndicate miniseries, which ran for six issues.

Trial of the Amazons will run between March and April 2022 and be collected in Trial of the Amazons #1 and #2, Nubia & the Amazons #6, Wonder Woman #785 and #786, and Trial of the Amazons: Wonder Girl #1 and #2, though not in that specific order. Cloonan closed by saying, “It is completely new for Wonder Woman. There hasn’t been an event like this ever before. Everything’s an inspiration, but it’s going to be fully original.”

Trial of the Amazons #1 goes on sale March 1 from DC Comics.
