Women’s College at Bargarh to be named after freedom fighter Parbati Giri – Times of India
Giri, also known as Mother Teresa of western Odisha, had dedicated her entire life for the downtrodden. The state government has already named a lift-irrigation scheme in her name after passing a proposal at the state cabinet meeting headed by chief minister Naveen Patnaik on December 24, 2016.
This college was established in 1978. Governing body of the college has recently discussed this in a meeting. The principal of the college has submitted a proposal for a change of name of the college, said the government letter.
“It is requested to kindly place this matter before the high power committee for change of name of the college from ‘Women’s College, Bargarh’ to Parbati Giri Women’s College, Bargarh’ as the educational agency has completed the necessary formalities for the same,” read the RDE, Sambalpur letter to Birendra Korkora, special secretary of the higher education department.
Pradeep Kumar Hota, principal of the college, said Parbati Giri has worked for the welfare of people. Apart from fighting against British rule, her tireless work for the improvement of conditions in jails and the eradication of leprosy is commendable. “Naming our college after her is a tribute to this great woman. This name will inspire and encourage students, teachers and people associated with the institution to do good in life,” he added.
Born on January 19, 1926, at Samalaipadar (then under undivided Sambalpur district), Parbati had participated in the Quit India movement at the age of 16. She had engaged herself in social service post-independence. She had also set up an orphanage at Paikmal. After her death, the orphanage shut down.
