Woman slams friend for nicking hotel towels but some disagree – here’s the rules
A WOMAN has sparked debate online after her friend admitted to taking towels from hotel rooms.
It’s very common for guests to take things away from their room when staying in a hotel, but some people apparently take it too far.
Tiktoker Téja Renée (@tejarenee) revealed that her friend was one of those people, following a conversation about hotel room freebies.
While Téja was completely on board with taking small things like shampoo and slippers, she argued that taking towels is theft.
However, her friend disagreed, saying that there was no difference in taking a towel or a pair of slippers.
Téja took to Tiktok to see if other people agreed with her or her friend.
In a video, she said: “I was talking to my friend about when you go to a hotel, I always take slippers and then they said they take the slippers, the shower gels and the towels.
“I was like, ‘no, if you take the towels that’s theft, you’re actually stealing, you can’t take towels’.
“They asked why it was different to take the slippers than it is to take the towels.
“I’m saying that taking slippers is different to taking towels. Taking the little things from the shower is different to taking the towels.
“Can we all just agree that it’s not the same thing and taking the towels is actually theft? I just need someone to be on my side.”
The video has been seen more than 5,000 times, with people divided in the comments section.
Most people agreed with Téja and said that taking towels was stealing.
One said: “I wouldn’t expect the slippers to be reused but the towels are.”
Another wrote: “Agree. The towels would be reused. The rest wouldn’t.”
A third added: “Something that can be reused is theft.”
However, there were those who argued that the towels should be up for grabs.
One said: “I keep thinking, it’s rank re-wearing slippers so take them.. but then I keep thinking about reusing towels.”
Another commented: “I have a towel from most destinations I’ve been to – it’s not theft, it’s souvenirs.”
However, hotel experts are pretty much unanimously on Téja’s side with this matter and all of them say that towels should always be left in the hotel room when you check out.
Joanna McCreary, general manager for the W Hotel in Austin, Texas, told Reader’s Digest: “Sheets, towels, and other linens are definitely something you shouldn’t take from hotel rooms.
“The hotels’ goal is to prepare the perfect room for the next guest. Taking pricy essentials makes it harder for hotel staff to do their job.”
Trip Savvy even claim that some hotels will automatically bill guests who take things that they shouldn’t, like dressing gowns and towels.
They said: “If you take something from your hotel room, you can expect an extra charge on your bill.
“Robes and towels are so commonly stolen that many hotels now list the charge right on the hanger; they will automatically bill the credit card they have on file for the extra cost of replacing these items.”
Meanwhile, hotel guests always make this big mistake whenever they check out of their rooms.
