However, a woman called Sara Poskonka (@facecination) revealed how she managed to miss, not only her first flight, but the two that she had been booked onto afterwards as well.

In her video, she explained how she was flying alone for the first time en route to visit her sister in 2019, when she got confused in the airport on three separate occasions.

Firstly, she claimed that she “didn’t understand that boarding times and departure times were not the same thing” which resulted in her missing flight number one.

Instead of getting on her plane when she should have been, Sara was instead ” at a bar having a good time”.

After rescheduling, Sara then missed her next flight which was due to take off four hours after her first one, because “the gate actually got changed” but she didn’t know because she had headphones in.

After missing both the announcement about her departure gate and her flight, Sara then had to reschedule for a second time, booking her onto her third flight of the day.

However, another change meant that she once again was unable to make it in time to board her flight.

Sara said she “got a phone call from my sister saying that they actually changed terminals, which meant I would have to take a shuttle bus in order to get to the next terminal”.

By that point, she was unable to make it to the boarding gate in time, and once again the plane took off without her in her seat.

Her delay meant that by the time she arrived on her fourth flight of the day, she was almost 12 hours late to see her sister.

Sara’s video has been seen more than 1.5million times in just three days, with lots of people baffled as to how she could miss so many flights in one day.

One wrote: “Just be.. observant? Like, observe? Listen? Look? All the ways we learn information?”

Another said: “How are you at the airport for 12 hours and don’t figure out how to get on a flight?”

A third added: “So you don’t check the gate until the last sec and repeat over and over!

“I’m frustrated for the family.”

While Sara’s long day in the airport happened because of her own mistakes, other people end up stuck there for other reasons out of their control.

However, there are ways in which passengers can save money, even while feeding themselves and trying to remain occupied.

Travel writer Josh Martin told Stuff NZ that spending money on a lounge pass could be cheaper than paying for airport meals and drinks.

Josh said: “Splurge on or qualify for a lounge pass, which is incentive enough to get you to the airport on time and adds a bit of luxury (read as: open bar) to your departure.”

There is a suggestion that splashing out for an airport lounge will put a cap on your spending.

A typical airport lounge will offer unlimited buffet-style food, unlimited drinks, both soft and alcoholic and other luxuries including comfortable seating, plugs and possibly even showers and games rooms.

According to research from travel insurance company Columbus Direct, the cheapest airport lounge in the country is at Southampton, where access can be gained from £21.50.

The most expensive is said to be at Heathrow terminal 5, which costs £40 for entry.

However, Columbus have said that the average passenger spends £52 on food, drink, snacks and entertainment, such as books and magazines, at airports.

Leaving passengers with potential savings of almost £30, if they splash out on the lounge, adding a bit of luxury to their journey.
