A text exchange between two daters has sparked debate online, after a woman rejected a man’s idea of getting ice cream on their first meeting.
In a screenshot of the messages shared by @ResistMonsters on Twitter, the man, Vance, said he was ‘excited’ for a scheduled date the following day.
‘I can pick you up but if you’re not comfortable with that we can just meet there,’ he told his match. ‘I don’t know why but I’m feeling like getting some ice cream in this hot weather lol.’
In response, the unnamed woman said: ‘Sorry if this may come off as rude but I don’t do ice cream dates. I’m a 26-year-old woman and a date like that seems like the absolute bare minimum.
‘Meeting up would be a waste of both of our times since we probably don’t have the same vibe.’
She signed off by wishing Vance the best, to which he replied, ‘Cool,’ alongside the smiling face with sunglasses emoji.
The pair’s romance ended before it had even began, but a number of Twitter users had strong views on who was in the right.
Some claimed grabbing ice cream was a ‘chill’ first date idea, allowing both parties to get to know each other in a pressure-free environment.
‘The first meeting is a time to just see if there’s a vibe,’ wrote one person. ‘Why not enjoy a sweet treat while seeing what’s good?’
Commenters branded the woman ‘corny and entitled’ and ‘fake boujee’, while one called her ‘worthless’ and accused her of using men.
Other’s however, felt that Vance should have tried harder to impress his date.
One user wrote: ‘I don’t think anyone should go on a low effort date. If a man takes me on a low effort cheap date, he doesn’t like me.’
‘An ice cream date as a first date in your 30s is f***ing crazy but I forgot people are okay with bare minimum effort,’ added another.
Meanwhile, conversation raged over the kind of activities deemed suitable for an initial meet-up.
‘Ain’t no rules, everything is made up,’ read one tweet. ‘If you like ice cream dates, do that. If you only accept steak and asparagus dates, do that. Just find you a lane and date someone who likes what you like.’
A second person argued that anything but dinner at a restaurant – where you effectively have to continue the date until you’ve eaten, even if you’re having a bad time – makes for a good choice.
She wrote: ‘Can we all finally admit that formal dining first dates that have been normalised as the only proper and official first date are actually the worst? Fully the worst, literally anything is better.’
Vance and his date-that-never-was clearly weren’t compatible, but the situation taught us something that may be may be worth keeping in mind ahead of your next rendezvous: it’s not just the lactose intolerant among us who’d take issue with an offer of a 99 Flake.
