Woman furious as ‘unreasonable’ neighbour complains about noise

On the parenting forum and social media platform Mumsnet, the woman, with username @TeaDrinkingBumbleeBee, explained she and her husband recently moved to a new flat with wooden floors, which are the main cause of the problem. She said that “on multiple occasions, our downstairs neighbour has come up to complain about noise”.

He reportedly said that there is constant “banging and scraping” on the floor and he keeps complaining about them being “too noisy”.

She claimed that they don’t make any anti-social noise apart from the desk chair moving slightly as her husband works from home.

The woman expressed her concern saying: “What on earth are we supposed to do? I’ve gone to bed and I am now worried that getting up to use the loo will cause another complaint!”

She explained that she purchased some felt pads for the bottom of the chairs but she can’t afford to get big enough rugs.

Other women took to the comments section to share their thoughts with @creakingknees saying that they had a similar issue while living in a flat with wooden floors.

The solution for her was to wear slippers when at home to minimise the noise when walking around and felt pads on the bottom of the chairs.

Another woman, @Expressedways, suggested she could buy cheap rugs from Ikea, and recommended they don’t wear shoes indoors and don’t run appliances overnight.

“It doesn’t sound like you’re doing anything unreasonable like having noisy parties or doing late-night aerobics. If your neighbour doesn’t want to hear normal household noise he should move and live in a top-floor flat or a house.”

A woman with username @VforVienetta explained that she had a similar issue where the upstairs neighbour would wear platform shoes and “it drove us insane,” she said.

He was reportedly a “petite man with a Prince complex” and it sounded like “he was shifting wardrobes around up there, turned out he had clothes boxes under his bed”.

In the meantime, she suggested they use slippers, and buy felt furniture pads and rugs.

Some of the most common disputes between neighbours are over noise, as well as pets and driveways. Another woman shared her frustration over noisy neighbours explaining the tenants from upstairs left her a note warning they were having a party.

She claimed that despite them being considerate enough the warn her, they often play “full volume music on bassy speakers” to the point it has left her in tears.

“I feel like I can’t have people over as I never know if they will be in and loud,” she said. She tried to ask them to turn the music down but that created some tension. She added: “I’m just so fed up with having to live my life by someone else’s social calendar.”

The best option when this problem arises is to politely ask the neighbours to turn the volume down. However, if they don’t listen, people can try contacting their local council and environmental health.

“If you’re having a problem with noise like loud music, rowdy parties or barking dogs in your neighbourhood, your council can help you,” the Government website states.
