Winter Fuel Payment: Pensioners may get £300 boost to help as Storm Arwen hits
A Winter Fuel Payment is given to certain individuals in order to help them pay their heating bills over the winter period. Individuals have been experiencing particularly tumultuous weather recently, as Storm Arwen has battered the country, and snow warnings have been issued by the Met Office. As a result, larger numbers of people will be spending more time indoors, and this may impact the amount they spend on heating.
With this in mind, those born on or before September 26, 1955 are likely to find they could receive support.
People will be entitled to a Winter Fuel Payment if they also lived in the UK for at least one day during the qualifying week.
This year, the week was classified as September 20 to 26, 2021.
Certain individuals may be able to get the Winter Fuel Payment if they live in Switzerland or a European Economic Area (EEA) country.

This means people do not have to worry about their state pension entitlement and can receive the sum easily this winter.
Age is particularly important when deciding what a person will receive from the Winter Fuel Payment.
Those born on or before September 26, 1941 are likely to get more than individuals born between September 27, 1941 and September 26, 1955.
However, there are also other circumstances which can impact a person’s entitlement.
This includes if a person lives alone, lives with someone else who qualifies, or is resident in a care home.
A Winter Fuel Payment may also be different if a person or their partner receives one of the following benefits:
- Pension Credit
- Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA)
- Income-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA)
- Income Support
The sum will range anywhere from £100 to a maximum of £300.
If a person wishes to check exactly how much they will get as a Winter Fuel Payment, they can visit the Government website.
Here, they will find the specificities of circumstances which will provide them with certain payments.
In most circumstances, a Winter Fuel Payment is made automatically in November or December.
Pensioners can expect to receive a letter telling them how much they will get and an estimated payment date.
However, if the money is not issued into an account of their choice by January 14, 2022, they should contact the Winter Fuel Payment Centre.
