Wimbledon fans complain to BBC over ‘totally unacceptable’ John McEnroe comments
John McEnroe has come under fire once again for his commentary at Wimbledon. The American has been working for the BBC this fortnight but keeps finding himself in the bad books of tennis fans who aren’t happy with his comments.
A day after he was slammed for not knowing who 25th seed Nicolas Jarry was, viewers have taken to Twitter to air their grievances with McEnroe’s remarks about Alexander Bublik. The Kazakh went down to Andrey Rublev in an exciting five-set match weeks after he beat the Russian in the Halle final.
But the seven-time Major champion’s commentary left a sour taste for dedicated tennis fans who thought McEnroe was slating Bublik to the general BBC viewers who might not know much about him. One called on Wimbledon and the BBC to “do something” about the American’s characterisation of the world No 26.
“John McEnroe’s comments about Bublik during his 4R were totally unacceptable,” @kokinakkis2 wrote in a lengthy notes post. “To claim he’s disrespectful to his opponents, that he hopes he loses, that he doesn’t care about the sport – comparing him to Kyrgios saying they’re in a ‘league of who cares the least.’”
She also wasn’t happy that audiences who had “never seen him before” would come away from the match believing McEnroe’s assessment and added: “As a huge fan of him, having met him four times and every time he’s been an absolute super star, I hope you are ashamed!!!”
And many others were in agreement, with @loveforforehand replying: “Absolutely agree!! His comments were baseless and absurd.” @PointGoblin added: “Agreed disgusting from @JohnMcEnroe.”
It’s not the first time McEnroe has been in hot water for his BBC commentary as he wasn’t aware of Carlos Alcaraz’s third-round opponent Jarry – despite the Chilean being a top 30 player. Even Australian tennis player John Millman got involved, though he did not directly name the 64-year-old.
“How a commentator can say ‘we don’t know Jarry but we’ll get to know him’ is beyond ridiculous. 87 million people play tennis worldwide and this guy is the 28th best at it currently. #Wimbledon,” the former world No 33 tweeted.
McEnroe was accused of doing the same thing “all the time” as he was told that the lines of commentary is disrespecting lower-ranked players. @JasontConnor wrote: “McEnroe says this all the time. It’s amazing, it’s disrespectful, and it shows McEnroe does not do his job. Anyone can go on YouTube and watch vids, learn Jarry’s game, and come prepared to commentate.”
