Wimbledon crowd wind up Novak Djokovic as umpire punishes Serb in final
The Wimbledon crowd once again began to turn on Novak Djokovic in his final against Carlos Alcaraz after the Serb was handed a time violation at a crucial point of the second-set tiebreak. Djokovic has had a love-hate relationship with the Wimbledon crowd throughout his career and oftentimes faces difficult atmospheres.
Every opponent he faces now is considered a huge underdog given Djokovic’s incredible 10-year unbeaten record on Centre Court. British sport fans love an underdog, meaning they’re more often than not cheering for Djokovic’s opponent.
That has been the case throughout this year’s Championships and remained the case in Sunday’s final. Djokovic took a relatively comfortable first set with Alcaraz needing to pick up his game in the second.
The crowd then got behind Alcaraz as they sensed a fightback from the Spaniard with a tiebreak needed to settle the set. The 23-time Grand Slam champion tried to compose himself in between serves, taking his service clock time all the way to the edge.
But he miscalculated while on serve at 5-4 down in the tiebreak with umpire Fergus Murphy calling a time violation as the clock ran down to zero. The warning for Djokovic led to huge cheers from the crowd as they began clapping.
The 36-year-old looked agitated by the cheers as he stood still in the same spot, looking up and around at the crowd. He then retreated from the baseline to recompose himself before going back to serve.
