Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina knocked out as Ons Jabeur gets revenge
Ons Jabeur gained revenge for last year’s Wimbledon final defeat to Elena Rybakina to return to the semi-finals. And the Tunisian will now meet Australian Open champion Aryna Sabalenka in a blockbuster last-four clash.
Rybakina came back from a set down to win her first and only Grand Slam title against Jabeeur last year. But back on Centre Court today, this time the Tunisian world No.6 turned the tables to triumph 6-7 6-4 6-1.
Jabeur took control of the match by winning five consecutive games from 4-4 in the second set to lead 3-0 in the decider before she took her first set point after one hour and 53 minutes. She broke the big Rybakina serve five times.
The rollercoaster first set saw four breaks of serve, including when Jabeur served for the set at 6-5.
The Tunisian showed her frustration during the tiebreak when he smacked a ball into the turf after going 3-4 down. Rybakina took her second set point when Jabeur sent a forehand return long.
Jabeur stepped up her play in the second set where she hit 14 winners and made only three unforced errors. Serving to stay in the set at 5-6, Rybakina was broken for the only time in the set when she could not retrieve a Jabeur backhand deep into her backhand corner.
