Will Smith has been banned from the Oscars for 10 years: Here’s what people are saying
The motion picture academy has banned Will Smith from all academy events for 10 years following his slap of Chris Rock at this year’s Oscars.
The decision was made Friday at a meeting of the academy’s Board of Governors to discuss a response. Though Smith is banned from attending the ceremonies, he is still eligible for awards and nominations.
The academy in a statement called Smith’s actions “unacceptable and harmful.”
Smith pre-emptively resigned from the academy last week and said he would accept any punishment the academy handed down.
Here’s how people are reacting to the news:
Many spoke up about how others in the industry accused or convicted of sexual abuse are still allowed at the Oscars, or how it took years to ban members such as Roman Polanski and Bill Cosby, but it only took 12 days to ban Smith.
Others joked that just being banned from attending ceremonies doesn’t seem much like a punishment.
