Will Helen McCrory be in Peaky Blinders season 6?
After the longest wait (two years to be exact) fans will see the sixth and final instalment of the Peaky Blinders on Sunday night.
The Birmingham- based drama aired its latest episode in September 2019 which left us on a dramatic cliffhanger.
Viewers only have a matter of hours to wait and see the nail-biting twists and turns that await in the highly-anticipated chapter. But sadly it’ll be the last. Sigh.
Leader of the Peaky Blinders, Tommy Shelby (Cillian Murphy), was seen pointing a gun at his head after having visions of his late wife Grace (Annabelle Wallis), with it not known whether the trigger was pulled.
However, one person whose absence will be truly felt this time around is Aunt Polly Gray, who ruled the roost of the Shelby family in the previous five seasons.
Will Helen McCory be in Peaky Blinders season 6?
Actress Helen McCrory, who played the formidable matriarch in the series, died after a battle with cancer.
Filming for the final episodes began in January 2021 following delays due to the pandemic, but McCrory was absent due to her cancer diagnosis.
Murphy previously revealed the entire Peaky Blinders cast was ‘desperately sad’ to film the show’s final season without the actress – and creator Steven Knight spoke about her lasting impact on the programme.
‘Helen McCrory was both the sovereign and the maid, regal and rebellious in the same minute,’ he told the Radio Times.
‘There was a look she had that pinned the object of her gaze to the wall, amused and aloof and time-stopping. It was a look she used to frame the character of Polly Gray, from 2013-19.’
‘Peaky will never be without the presence of Aunt Polly,’ Knight added.
‘We decided very early on that we needed to push on and that we needed to finish it. We hope that the series will be a testament to Helen.’
Has Polly been re-cast?
It’s not yet known how the drama will write out McCrory, however Murphy and Knight both assured fans that her ‘presence and her character’s presence are very much still felt in the series, and it is very much part of Tommy’s journey in the season.’
Speaking with Variety, Murphy has said that the final season will be a tribute to the late McCrory, who played his Aunt Polly on the series.
‘I think this is the culmination of the series that hopefully improves upon the last season and makes the most recent one the richest and deepest one that we possibly can partially because of all of the pandemic s*** happening in the world and, of course, the really sad loss of [Helen] McCrory’ said the 45-year-old actor.
‘I think we are determined to make this a special series and we have been extra committed to working hard. I think the fans will be pleased.’
When did Helen McCroy die?
McCrory‘s death was announced last April by her actor husband Damian Lewis.
She died at age 52 following a ‘heroic battle’ with cancer, sending shockwaves and devastation through the Peaky Blinders fanbase.
The late star also played Narcissa Malfoy in the Harry Potter franchise, the mother of Harry’s arch-rival Draco Malfoy (Tom Felton) and wife to Lucius (Jason Isaacs).
Author JK Rowling said: ‘I’m devastated to learn of the death of Helen McCrory, an extraordinary actress and a wonderful woman who’s left us far too soon.
‘My deepest condolences to her family, especially her husband and children. Simply heartbreaking news.’
The actress was one of the UK’s most beloved and highly-acclaimed stars across television, film and theatre, with dozens of tributes quickly pouring in from across the entertainment industry.
Helen is survived by her husband, as well as her two children – daughter Manon McCrory-Lewis, 14, and son Gulliver, 13.
Peaky Blinders season 6 will begin on February 27 on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
