Why your Spain holiday is going to cost more and be harder to book this summer

SPANISH holidays are going to be more difficult to book this year, with both costs and demand rising.

The country is one of the UK’s favourite holiday destinations, but this year Brits could miss out on their trip to Spain because of two main issues.

Firstly, prices are on the rise for both flights and accommodation.

Numbers published this week by the Spanish National Institute of Statistics reveal that holidays in Spain cost around 20 percent more than they did last year.

Meanwhile, hostel and campsite prices have also risen by 5.7 percent, making things tougher for holidaymakers.

However, along with prices, demand is also on the rise, with hotels selling 52 percent of their available rooms for summer by June, according to The Local.

They say that number is two per cent higher than in 2022 and 17 per cent higher than in 2019 for the same dates.

This is because more Spanish people are opting for staycations this year rather than going abroad.

The Local said: “The price rises, which are not only tourism related but linked to the ongoing inflationary cost of living crisis, do seem to be changing the plans of many Spaniards.

“The main consequence is that more will forego foreign trips and stay at home the summer. 

“Around two-thirds of Spaniards who plan to travel this summer will opt for domestic destinations, with the Mediterranean coast and Andalusia region among the favourites.”

This increase in demand and costs will have a knock-on effect on Brits, who will have to pay more for their trips than they normally would have.

The rise in costs has also had an impact on UK holidaymakers’ plans as well, with more than half of Brits said to be planning to shun overseas trips this year as well.

A survey, published by Visit Cornwall earlier this year, suggests that flight delays and hot temperatures are among the reasons that people are opting to avoid foreign holidays.

However, one in four say they are choosing staycations because of lower prices and less competition for reservations.

Another third miss British food while a quarter get annoyed with fellow passengers.
