Why you should do MUN – Scarlett Pirrie – Lady Eleanor School
Its aim is to represent what the UN would be like if you were a delegate of a country as well as teach important skills such as public speaking, leadership and collaboration.
The student has to learn important research skills, as they have research and condense information on their country’s point of view on particular issues ranging from human rights to climate change.
You also have to prepare speeches on the various topics which explain you county’s view and how you would solve the issue. This teaches you important public speaking skills and how to successfully convince a audience as well as answer challenging questions. Although, it may seem hard at first, the people there are very nice and you should pick up on proceedings pretty quickly.
You also learn collaboration skills and persuasion, when you submit resolutions – a plan on how to solve an issue e.g water sanitation. To submit your plan for debate you must obtain signatures from fellow delegates.
This teaches you collaboration skills as you must learn to work with you allied countries and convince other delegates to sign / support it.
Overall, MUN teaches you many important life skills as well as being a fun and collaborative event where you get to work with many different people and have fun solving real world problems.
