Why VLC may not be banned in India and how you can download – Times of India

Seems all the news about VLC getting banned by the Indian government may not be true. Yes, the official website of VLC — videolan.org is not opening the VLC media. However, there are chances that this may be due to a server issue. As we tried opening the website and as expected it failed to open. However, upon doing a Google search and clicking on the ‘VLC’ tag from the suggestion, the website opened on a Windows laptop. The URL for that is “www.videolan.org/vlc/. We tried the same on a couple of other laptops including MacBook Air (M1) and after a couple of tries, it worked. Incidentally, VLC always opened on Google Play Store, Apple App Store and Android TVs.

So, if you are wondering how to download the VLC media player on Windows, here are a few options for you that we tried and worked.
Using Microsoft Store
It is important to note that VLC is still listed on Microsoft Store and available for download. If you are using Windows 10 or Windows 11 operating system, open Microsoft Store and search for VLC.
From the search result, tap on the Install button to download.
Using VLC’s website
Head to www.videolan.org/vlc/ from any web browser (we tested it on Edge and Chrome). Hit the Download button to download the installer. Once downloaded, run the installer and install the app.
Using third-party websites
There are several third-party websites that allow users to download the VLC media player on Windows. Just make sure to download it from a trusted website as the installer may contain malware and virus.
Meity ‘response’ on VLC ban
The Internet Freedom Foundation (IFF) has also filed a Right to Information application with DoT seeking more information on the website getting banned. The application was transferred to GoI_MeitY which responded with “No information is available [with MeitY]”.
