Why no horse wants barrier 18 on Cup day
Which barriers have been the most and least successful when it comes to winning on Melbourne Cup day? See where every horse will jump from.
Melbourne Cup favourite Incentivise has drawn barrier 16 for Tuesday’s big race.
The superstar horse is one of a host of leading contenders who will be jumping from wide on the track.
Verry Elleegant will be in barrier 19 while Spanish Mission will jump from gate 14.
No horse has ever won from barrier 18 while barrier 5 has been the most successful with eight winners.
Since 1983 barriers 6, 12, 15, 18, 22 and 24 haven’t produced a Cup winner.
See the full results of the barrier draw below.
1 – TWILIGHT PAYMENT 58kg
Barrier: 2
Reigning champion who made it seven wins in the great race for owner Lloyd Williams last year.
2 – INCENTIVISE 57kg
Barrier: 16
Racing’s latest sensation could jump from the carpark and still win. Can he give Peter Moody the ultimate training achievement?
3 – SPANISH MISSION 57kg
Barrier: 14
The talented import has endured a tough 48 hours with minor skin infection. Main threat to the favourite.
4 – VERRY ELLEEGANT 57kg
Barrier: 19
Nine-time Group 1 winner and reigning Horse Of The Year should keep the favourite honest.
5 – EXPLOSIVE JACK 54kg
Barrier: 4
A disappointing 17th in the Caulfield Cup took the wind out of his sails. Enjoyed a monster autumn winning three Derbies.
6 – THE CHOSEN ONE 54kg
Barrier: 5
Damian Lane takes the reins here after partnering horse to 14th place in the Caulfield Cup. Did finish fourth in this last year.
7 – DELPHI 53.5kg
Barrier: 3
Former Aidan O’Brien galloper who was well beaten behind Incentivise in Caulfield Cup.
8 – OCEAN BILLY 53.5kg
Barrier: 13
Finished ninth in Caulfield Cup after arriving from across the ditch. Won the Auckland Cup at 3200m in March.
9 – SELINO 53.5kg
Barrier: 24
Another of the Chris Waller brigade, who is proven at 3200m with two wins to his name, but his Caulfield Cup performance was disappointing.
10 – JOHNNY GET ANGRY 53kg
Barrier: 22
Beaten a total of 48 lengths at past two starts. Denis Pagan’s Derby winner will certainly have work cut out.
11 – KNIGHTS ORDER 53kg
Barrier: 9
Well beaten in the Geelong Cup then again in Saturday’s Hotham doesn’t augur well for the first lady of racing, Gai Waterhouse.
12 – PERSAN 53kg
Barrier: 11
Fifth last year and a respectable third in the Caulfield Cup. Carrying two more kilograms.
13 – CARIF 52.5kg
Barrier: 8
The Team Snowden runner won last year’s Sandown Cup at the two miles.
14 – MASTER OF WINE 52.5kg
Barrier: 6
Never a chance in the Caulfield Cup and hasn’t set the world alight for some time.
15 – PONDUS 52.5kg
Barrier: 1
A natural stayer who will have the Lloyd Williams polish, and with his seven wins, that carries plenty.
16 – GRAND PROMENADE 52kg
Barrier: 21
Effortless Bart Cummings winner for the Ciaron Maher and David Eustace stable, but the Cup distance could be an issue.
17 – MIAMI BOUND 52kg
Barrier: 17
2019 VRC Oaks winner, who finished fifth in the Moonee Valley Cup. Needs it wet.
18 – PORT GUILLAUME 52kg
Barrier: 23
Jockey Harry Coffey, a cystic fibrosis sufferer, gets his first ride in the great race and will be the fairytale favourite.
19 – SHE’S IDEEL 52kg
Barrier: 20
Struggling to fire in the spring, but has the right credentials to be in the finish.
20 – FUTURE SCORE 51.5kg
Barrier: 15
Three runs this campaign have been ordinary at best. Will struggle.
21 – TRALEE ROSE 51kg
Barrier: 12
Hard-fought Geelong Cup secured her place in the big one. Will definitely get the journey.
22 – FLOATING ARTIST 50kg
Barrier: 10
Powered home to just miss in Moonee Valley Cup and has been in superb touch this spring. Makes it four runners for the Ciaron Maher and David Eustace camp.
23 – GREAT HOUSE 50kg
Barrier: 7
The Hotham Handicap winner is another from the Chris Waller camp. Gets in with 50kg and should give a good account of himself.
24 – SIR LUCAN 50kg
Barrier: 18
The Gai Waterhouse-trained import is lightly raced and may need another year. Does have similar profile to previous Melbourne Cup winners Rekindling and Cross Counter.

HOW THE BIG NAMES WILL RUN
INCENTIVISE ($2.30)
Obviously didn’t race after his emphatic Caulfield Cup win a week earlier however he did undergo the scrutiny of the handicapper and copped a 1.5kg penalty which brings him in now with 57kg. Doubt that’s enough to stop him as that would have been the least connections could have possibly expected.
VERRY ELLEEGANT ($13)
She was excellent in the Cox Plate hitting the line strongly to only go down by a length finishing third. The bookies obviously agreed as she’s now into third favouritism and on that run she’s going into the race as well as last year and she did turn in a fantastic run when seventh behind Twilight Payment.
TRALEE ROSE ($15)
She’s building an excellent record with six wins and as many placings from just 15 starts and during the week was good winning the Geelong Cup. Fought hard to hold off Dr Drill and while that’s hardly a big tick for the Melbourne Cup she did escape a penalty and goes into the big race with only 51kg and will peak on the day.
MIAMI BOUND ($101)
She’ll make the field but would need a wet track to figure anywhere. Fourth run back from a spell and plodded home for fifth in the Moonee Valley Cup and that’s hardly good enough.
FLOATING ARTIST ($17)
Snuck into the field with the last ticket and he’s not without a chance. Was a certainty beaten in the Moonee Valley Cup and he was only rated $101 early in the week due to where he sat in the order of entry. Much, much shorter now!
