Why Malta has something for everyone

Malta is the perfect retreat for an action-packed adventure on land and sea.

Beach bliss 

With serene waters, idyllic sweeps of golden and red sands and soaring cliffs, Malta offers a unique blend of beach experiences.

On the northern coast, protected Paradise Bay beach is all golden sands and calm waters, while Ghajn Tuffieha is an unspoiled crescent of golden-red sand backed by verdant clay cliffs.

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Maltese capital of Valletta is a baroque delight. Built by the Knights of St John in the 16th Century, the city is all honeyed stone and theatrical architecture, from the golden interiors of St John’s Co-Cathedral to the opulent frescoes of the Grand Master’s Palace.

Set on fingers that reach out into Valletta’s harbour, the so-called Three Cities of Vittoriosa, Cospicua and Senglea show a slice of authentic Maltese  life and are surprisingly little visited. Hop on a boat and explore these cities that date back to the Phoenicians.

Due west and tucked within fortified walls is Malta’s old capital, Mdina. Known as the ‘silent city’ after it was left virtually deserted during the Ottomans’ Great Siege of Malta in 1565. It remains home to just a few hundred inhabitants and its maze of narrow streets and impressive architecture transport you back in time.

Don’t miss the charming village of Marsaxlokk, known for its brightly painted traditional fishing boats and bustling Sunday market selling local crafts and fresh seafood, a must-visit for foodies.

Family fun

It’s not just the calm shallow waters and strollable cities that make Malta ideal for families.  

Once used as a film set for the spinach-chowing sailor man in the 1980s, Popeye Village has been turned into a fun-filled attraction of higgledy-piggledy houses with live shows, obstacle courses, water trampolines, and even the opportunity to meet Popeye himself.

Little ones will also enjoy exploring the history of Mdina at the interactive Knights of Malta exhibit, which brings to life the stories of crusader knights.
