Why BA (JMC) is better than any other BA course – Times of India

Bennett University’s Times School of Media trains students to create content as text stories, podcasts, video stories, infographics and photo essays, writes Sunil Saxena
Do you know which is the best Bachelor of Arts (BA) programme to do in India? The answer is BA (Journalism and Mass Communication).
And do you know why? It is the only undergraduate programme that readies you for 12 possible careers across six different tracks. The programme is designed to create professionals who can pick and choose from these exciting tracks and not just get limited to one.
The first track is journalism. If your dream is to become a journalist, then you can do a BA (JMC) course and become a digital journalist, a television journalist or a print journalist. The second track is that of content writing. With the same skill sets, you are also set to become a content creator, and the need for content creators is growing with every passing day. The third track is advertising. You can get into an advertising agency after completing your BA (JMC) course. The fourth track is public relations. Every public relations firm needs digital PR professionals and there are not enough available. The fifth track takes you into the exciting word of digital marketing or social media marketing, another sunrise area with more demand than supply. The sixth track is films. This is now complemented by television serials, OTT platforms and streaming services. The setting up of professional film production houses that produce films as well as television and web serials has led to a boom in film jobs.
The list of opportunities goes on. You cannot forget events. Now that the economy has opened up, and events are back, BAJMC graduates are needed in droves to fill up event management positions.
The best part is that these job opportunities become available to you right after you finish your BA(JMC) programme. Compare this with a BA degree in a standalone subject like English Literature, History, Sociology, Political Science etc and you will realise that you may have become a graduate, but you still have a long way to go before any significant job opportunities become available to you.
The BA (JMC) graduate has more industry-relevant skills than any other graduate. For instance, Bennett University’s Times School of Media, which has been set up by the Times Group, trains students to create content as text stories, podcasts, video stories, infographics and photo essays. The students also learn to write blogs, produce newspapers, anchor television bulletins, create 360 degree advertising campaigns and much more.
To be able to do this, the students are taught to work on eight different kinds of software/applications. These include Final Cut Pro to edit video footage, Canva to create infographics, Audacity to create podcasts and radio jingles, FilmoraGo and iMovies to edit videos on mobile phones, Affinity Publisher to make newspaper pages, Excel to mine data, Celtx to write film scripts and Times of India’s Content Management System to upload web content.
There are eight Times Group companies that have pooled in their domain expertise to create this unique programme. They include The Times of India, Times Now, Radio Mirchi, Times Internet Limited, Mediawire, Junglee Pictures, MX Player and Zoom TV.
No other undergraduate programme makes a student so career ready. It is time that the students realised this and started looking at BA (JMC) as not another BA programme but as a professional degree that opens doors to 12 exciting careers.
