Football fans have woken up to a horrifying sight this morning – there are no World Cup games taking place today.

After 17 continues days of matches, Wednesday is the first day since the tournament began on November 20 where no teams will take to the field.

And so with football fanatics having to temporarily adjust to life without the World Cup, find out the reason behind the break in play and when supporters can expect their next Qatar 2022 fix.

Why are there no World Cup matches on today?

The World Cup is taking a two day pause between the end of the round of 16 and the start of the quarter-finals.

The break in play will give the teams involved in the quarter-finals the chance to recover and prepare for the matches.

The eight nations contesting the quarter-finals have had a grueling schedule so far in the tournament, playing four matches each in just under two weeks.

At previous World Cups, there is usually a pause in the action between the end of the group stage and the start of the round of 16, but with the World Cup crammed into the middle of the season, that was not the case this time around.

The group stages ended on December 2, with the knockout stages starting on December 3.

When is the next World Cup match?

The next game at Qatar 2022 will be Croatia vs Brazil on Friday, December 9 at 3pm, with the Netherlands and Argentina meeting later in the evening at 7pm.

A day later, Morocco or Spain will play Portugal or Switzerland at 3pm.

England will meet current World Champions France just hours later at 7pm, with the blockbuster showdown kicking off at 7pm on Saturday evening.

Once the quarter-finals have finished, there will be two days without matches until the first semi-final takes place on Tuesday, December 13 at 7pm.
