Who Is Chasm? Marvel Teases a Dark, Post-Spider-Man Identity for One Hero

Marvel teases Ben Reilly becoming a character called Chasm following the events of Amazing Spider-Man #93, which will pit him against Peter Parker.

While Ben Reilly’s time as the Amazing Spider-Man may be coming to an end, the hero may soon find himself with a dark new identity: Chasm.

In a press release, Marvel revealed information on Amazing Spider-Man #93, which will be the final installment in the “Beyond” storyline. Written by Zeb Wells and illustrated for Patrick Gleason, Amazing Spider-Man #93 promises to shake up the wall-crawler’s world in a big way and to pit Ben against Peter Parker. According to the press release, this end “may be the beginning of something else.”

While the press release doesn’t explicitly use the name “Chasm,” a piece of ominous artwork features the name spelled out in its mouth. At this time, there is no official information on Chasm or Ben’s potential transformation into the character.

At the beginning of the “Beyond” storyline, Peter was injured in a fight with the U-Foes, resulting in his hospitalization. Due to complications from that battle, Peter was taken out of the action for quite awhile and thus passed the mantle off to Ben, who was working with the mysterious Beyond Corporation. As the series has progressed, the Beyond Corporation has only proven itself more and more sinister.

Created by Gerry Conway and Ross Andru, Ben Reilly first appeared as a clone of Peter in 1975’s Amazing Spider-Man #149. Over the years, he’s used a variety of code names, though one of the most prominent is the Scarlet Spider. In terms of abilities, Ben possesses the same powers as Peter, which allowed him to take up the mantle of Spider-Man for a time in the ’90s.
