Where is New York Stewart Airport, how far is it from the city and which airlines fly there?

A BUDGET airline has announced plans to fly cheap routes from the UK to New York, starting from just £139.

However, the bargain flights won’t be heading to the well-known JFK Airport, but instead land at the lesser-known New York Stewart Airport.

Where is New York Stewart Airport?

New York Stewart Airport, which gained its new name back in 2018 after previously being called just Stewart Airport, is 70 miles north of New York City, which is much further than JFK airport which is just 19 miles from the city.

The remote location has its benefits though as smaller airports carry significantly lower landing charges which keeps costs down – Stewart’s fares are 10 times cheaper than New York’s LaGuardia airport.

Thanks to the tiny number of flights that pass through the airport, flight delays are far less likely for both those coming into land and passengers waiting to board too.

There is just one terminal, with eight passenger gates, which means it is also a lot quicker to get through passport control and reclaim luggage.

A new 20,000sqft international arrivals station was also completed in 2020, which can process up to 400 arrivals per hour, but is yet to welcome its first international airline.

Last year, just 97,000 passengers flew through the airport, all of which were domestic travellers, compared to their best year in 2007 which saw more than 913,000 domestic travellers.

How far is New York Stewart Airport from the city?

Being 70 miles from the city, Brits will have to think about how they plan to get to their hotel.

Airport shuttle services on a coach take around 90 minutes to get into Manhattan and a taxi would set you back more than $200 dollars.

There is also a $1 shuttle bus to Beacon train station, which then has direct routes into the city.

Which airlines fly into New York Stewart Airport?

Budget Icelandic airline PLAY has announced new routes between the UK and New York, which will operate from New York Stewart Airport.

The £159 fares will launch later this year, with four flights per week.

Other airlines include JetBlue, Frontier and Allegiant, all flying between New York and Florida, Michigan and South Carolina.

The airport lost flights from Norwegian Air who previously operated long-haul flights to Scotland and Ireland.

However, Norse Atlantic Airways has since announced plans for routes from Norway to New York Stewart later this year.
