The number of people in hospital with Covid in Queensland has spiked overnight as the state recorded another 9546 infections but authorities have revealed when cases are expected to decline.
Queensland has recorded 9546 Covid cases and 11 deaths in the past 24 hours as the southeast braces to reach its peak of the Omicron wave next week.
The state is expected to have a steady rise in cases over the next few weeks, followed by a steady fall in the following month.
Chief health officer Dr John Gerard said there were 929 people in hospital, significantly up from 878 reported yesterday.
“Brisbane is going through its peak next week and probably Townsville the following weekend.” Dr Gerard said.
“Cannes, interestingly is a little bit earlier and will probably be approaching a peak now or in the next few days. But so it‘s it’s different in different regions.”
More than 50 patient are in ICU.
Of the latest deaths in the state, none of the 11 people had received a booster shot.Four were unvaccinated, one had two doses and six were double dosed.
Those who have died were in their 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s.
More than 3845 rapid antigen test have been reported.
Queensland residents are now eligible for their booster shot three months after their second with more than 15 per cent of eligible people having had their third dose.
Vaccine coverage reached 91 per cent double vaccinated dose on Tuesday with more than 26 per cent of children vaccinated.
Meanwhile, Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said Townsville could expect an acceleration in cases over the next two weeks.
“37 people are in the Townsville hospital – one person is in ICU” Ms Palaszczuk said.
“Over 92 per cent of people in Townsville have had their first jabs and double dose is at 92 per cent”
Dr Gerrard said Gold Coast hospitalisations have slightly decreased over the past four days.
“The peak and the utilization of hospital beds is actually a lower than what we were expecting – it would appear the Gold Coast is close to or passed the current peak,” Dr Gerard said.
“As we’re approaching the peak. If you are at the point where you are eligible to get a booster shot, that’s a third dose, which is any time within three months of your second dose. Now is the time to get it.”
“There’ll be some sort of tail end at some stage and there may be few future cases as we move forward.”
Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said the next two weeks are “very critical” as the state reaches the peak of Omicron.
“None of this is easy, we don’t want to be reporting this” Ms Palaszcuzuk said.
