When are the three bank holidays this May?
There’s many great things about Easter – the long bank holiday, the hot cross buns, the Easter eggs – but there’s no denying it can make it harder to get back into a normal routine.
Two four-day working weeks in a row, after all.
But the good news for Brits wanting to make the most of time with friends and family, or days spent pottering around the garden, fixing odd jobs at home, or generally doing something they wouldn’t normally, is we have more bank holidays coming up very soon.
And thanks to King Charles, we’re getting an extra! When are they?
When are the May bank holidays?
The first bank holiday in May happens to land on the first day of May.
The Early May Bank Holiday is one we get every year, and is always celebrated on the first Monday of the month.
This year, that just so happens to be May 1.
The Early May Bank Holiday first originated as a Roman festival celebrating the beginning of the summer season. As time went by, the Early May Bank Holiday became a day to campaign for and honour the rights of workers.
Then, in a fortunate twist, the next Monday, May 8, is also a bank holiday.
This one is an extra to our usual allowance and is being added to celebrate the coronation of King Charles III.
Charles’ coronation is on Saturday, May 6, and it’ll be one for the history books – with the slimmed down monarchy making their first appearance of the Carolean era.
Charles will wear the St Edward’s Crown as his reign is cemented and a procession of key royals will take place from Westminster Abbey to Buckingham Palace.
Invitations were sent out to world leaders and important figures – and many are expected to attend, though US President Joe Biden is thought to be sending First Lady Jill in his stead.
The third and final bank holiday in May will be another Monday.
You’ll certainly like Mondays more when you only have to work two across the whole month of May.
On May 29, Brits will have the Spring Bank Holiday.
