WhatsApp proxy: 8 things to know about the new messaging workaround – Times of India
What is WhatsApp by proxy?
As mentioned, WhatsApp proxy support will enable users to connect with their friends, family and even emergency responder services (if they are available on WhatsApp) when there is no internet connectivity available. Volunteers and/ or organisations can set up servers that will allow users of the instant messaging app to connect to those servers and communicate freely.
How to find proxy servers?
Those who are witnessing a disruption in internet services can seek help from others who have access to the internet. They can search for trusted sources that have created a proxy through social media.
If users are still unable to send or receive WhatsApp messages using a proxy, it is possible that the proxy may have been blocked. Users can long-press the blocked proxy address to delete it and then enter a new proxy address to try again.
Why use WhatsApp with proxy
WhatsApp’s motive to roll out this update is to help “many people who continue to be denied the ability to reach their loved ones because of internet shutdowns.” Multiple countries, such as Iran – which is witnessing anti-government protests over the mandatory hijab law – and war-torn Ukraine are reeling under disrupted internet connections, leaving them unable to connect with their loved ones. WhatsApp proxy support can enable people to seek help in such situations.
Is using WhatsApp via proxy servers safe?
WhatsApp notes that when users connect with each other via proxy, their messages are end-to-end encrypted. This means that not the proxy servers, WhatsApp, or Meta will be able to access the messages shared. However, the instant messaging platform says that the use of a third-party proxy will share users’ IP addresses with the proxy provider as third-party proxies aren’t provided by WhatsApp.

What does WhatsApp has to say
“What this means is we’re putting the power into people’s hands to maintain access to WhatsApp if their connection is blocked or disrupted,” WhatsApp said.
“Our wish for 2023 is that these internet shutdowns never occur. Disruptions like we’ve seen in Iran for months on end deny people’s human rights and cut people off from receiving urgent help. Though in case these shutdowns continue, we hope this solution helps people wherever there is a need for secure and reliable communication,” it added.
