What does Barbie do for a living? Well, everything.
She’s a pilot, a journalist, a doctor, a scientist, an astronaut, a tennis player, a dancer, a business executive, a gymnast, a dentist, the president of the United States… the list goes on.
And Ken? His job is Beach.
As Greta Gerwig’s Barbie made note of, Barbie has more than 200 jobs, so while all the jobs in Barbie Land are done by Barbie, Ken doesn’t really do anything apart from Beach (and no, he isn’t a lifeguard).
And while the Barbie movie has caused some couples to breakup, for others the gag has inspired a cute TikTok trend where IRL Barbies share their Ken’s jobs.
Well, that is, what they would be if we really did live in Barbie Land.
‘My Ken’s job is fish,’ wrote one TikTok user.
‘He thinks he’s really good at fish. He comes with waders, a mullet and his own fly rod.’
Another girl said her Ken’s job was Office: ‘He’s very proud of his work. He came with a suit and Microsoft excel,’ she wrote.
‘My Ken’s job is bike,’ wrote another.
‘He doesn’t care about fashion any other time but has all these cute outfits for bike and gets so excited when he thinks he looks good doing bike.’
Another said her Ken’s job was Date.
‘He’s very good at weddings,’ she wrote. ‘He came with a suit, jokes to tell the other Ken’s and three signature dance moves.’
Let’s be honest, does anyone really know what their Ken’s do when they leave the house and go to work? Or even when they sit a few metres away at their desk? We think not.
The ‘What’s Your Ken’s Job’ trend is a playful spin on this ubiquitous truth and a way for us to continue the ongoing Barbie fever.
Plus, it makes men and their hobbies seem a little more endearing, don’t you think? The antithesis of ‘he’s just Ken.’
