What to do in Denver over Thanksgiving weekend
Gobble wobble
Thursday. Few holiday traditions in Denver are as exhilarating or as rewarding as the annual Mile High United Way Turkey Trot in Washington Park, 1700 E. Louisiana Ave. Rising early (or perhaps you were already up getting that turkey stuffed and set in the oven) and heading out into the crisp, sometimes frigid, air to run or walk for four miles alongside 9,000 people, many of them in costumes, with a similar degree of fortitude, is a great way to start the day.
Registration for the 49th annual Turkey Trot, 9 a.m. on Thanksgiving Day, includes: includes a commemorative t-shirt, a bib with a timing tag, and pre- and post-race festivities, including a craft beer garden. Pets are allowed, and there is a one-mile family fun as well. Registration costs $40-$45. Information is at https://unitedwaydenver.org.

Denver’s Union Station lit up for The Grand Illumination to start the holiday season on November 24, 2017.
Friday. Denver’s historic train station will be all aglow tonight during the Grand Illumination, which takes place from 5 to 8 p.m. and features performances of classic holiday music by the Denver Dolls, a visit from Santa & Mrs. Claus and the lighting of an outdoor 40-foot-tall Christmas tree with more than 7,000 lights. Denver Union Station will also host the Merry & Bright Lights Show nightly from 5 to 10 p.m. throughout the holiday season. The show transforms the exterior façade into “a spectacular canvas spreading holiday cheer, organizers said.
Inside the station, the Miracle at Union Station pop-up cocktail bar returns as well, with its “delightfully ostentatious holiday décor, delectable cocktails and the nostalgia of childhood’s dancing sugar-plum visions.” There will also be a Hanukkah table amidst the Christmas frenzy. The 2022 Miracle at Union Station will be open from Nov. 23-Dec. 26th.
Get down and boogie
Saturday. You can listen to any tune in your car or on your earbuds, but there are some artists whose live performances are so powerful that they forever change the way you hear their songs after that. Local country singer and songwriter Angie Stevens is one of those artists.
In support of her new single, “Learn to Let the Light In,” and 7-song album, Angie Stevens and the Beautiful Wreck will play the Bluebird Theater, 3317 E. Colfax Ave., on Nov. 26. The show also celebrates Stevens’ return to the stage. She’ll be joined by the Bonnie & Taylor Sims Band and Seth Doud. Doors open at 7 p.m. Tickets are $20 at axs.com.

Saturday-Sunday. Small Business Saturday, as the day after Black Friday is called, will see a couple of dozen holiday markets popping up across the Front Range. One of the best of the bunch is the Horseshoe Holiday Market on Nov. 26-27, which features high-quality, curated handmade items. “Shoppers are guaranteed to find something meaningful, beautiful and perfect for anyone on their lists–things you won’t find in the big box stores,” organizers say.
The 13th annual market will once again take place at the historic Highlands Masonic Temple and in heated outdoor tents at 3550 Federal Blvd. Vendors include ceramic, glass and fiber artists, clothing designers, candlemakers, and art and vintage collectors. There will also be live music, food trucks, and artisanal food like handmade chocolates, hot sauces, gourmet sea salts, baked goods, coffee and hot cocoa. The market runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days. Admission is free but $5 donations are encouraged to support Denver Public Schools.
