What time does the MultiVersus open beta start and how to download
The free-to-play Smash Bros. clone from Warner Bros., features characters from Batman to Shaggy and is available to everyone this month.
There have been many Super Smash Bros. clones over the years but none of them have come close to the quality or popularity of Nintendo’s original, but new game MultiVersus may be the one to finally offer a real alternative.
The recent closed beta has proven very popular with those that have played it, including us, and it’s now going to be available for everyone to play, on almost every format.
There’s no set release date for the final version but the beta features 17 different playable characters and already more are planned, including Rick and Morty.
How do you download MultiVersus for free?
Once the open beta goes live (see below) you can just download and play it like a regular game. It’s already on the PlayStation Store and the Xbox Store, as well as Steam.
For some reason the Steam version currently only lists paid editions of the game, but that will no doubt change once the open beta is live.
However, all of the formats have paid-for versions featuring in-game currency and instant unlock tokens for characters, plus cosmetic extras like skins and ring out effects – if you want everything right from the start.
When does the MultiVersus open beta start in the UK?
Although lots of people have been able to play MultiVersus already, via the closed beta and early access tests, it won’t be available as a normal download for everyone until 5pm BST on Tuesday, July 26.
The open beta will then run indefinitely and will segue straight into the final version, with all your progress being retained.
Since there’s no date for the final version it’ll probably work something like Fortnite, which was technically in beta for a long time but that didn’t really make any difference to the content that was available.
What formats is MultiVersus available on and does it have crossplay?
MultiVersus is available on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and PC. So the only major format you can’t play it on is the Nintendo Switch.
It does feature crossplay across all formats, so there are no limitations, and any Xbox version can play with any PlayStation version, which is neat.
Do you need PlayStation Plus or Xbox Live Gold for MultiVersus?
No. Like most free-to-play games you can play online without having to pay anything extra. Since the final version will also be free, that won’t change once the online beta is over.
You will need a pretty fast internet connection though as, like any fighting game, the fast action means slow or unreliable broadband can cause problems. The game does have rollback netcode though, so that will help to smooth things out on a medium speed connection.
What characters are in MultiVersus?
At launch there are 17 characters in the game, although only four are available to play as once you start. You have to unlock the rest with in-game currency, which can be paid for but is also relatively easy to earn just through playing.
- Batman (DC Comics)
- Superman (DC Comics)
- Wonder Woman (DC Comics)
- Harley Quinn (DC Comics)
- Shaggy (Scooby-Doo)
- Velma (Scooby-Doo)
- Bugs Bunny (Looney Tunes)

What maps are in MultiVersus?
Although the game has lots of characters there’s considerably less maps, with only nine in total – and some of those are just variants of each other.
- The Batcave (DC Comics)
- Scooby’s Haunted Mansion (Scooby-Doo)
- Sky Arena (Steven Universe)
- Tree Fort (Adventure Time)
- Tree Fort 1 vs 1 (Adventure Time)
- Classic 3 Platform

What modes are in MultiVersus?
As well as characters, MultiVersus also has lots of modes. In fact, one of the major differences compared to Smash Bros. is that the primary one is 2v2, even though four-player and 1v1 are still available.
- 2 vs. 2
- 1 vs. 1
- 4-player free-for-all (including local play)
- co-op vs. AI
- custom online lobbies
- The Lab (practice mode)
