NEW DELHI: The National Exit Test (NExT) is a comprehensive medical postgraduate examination designed to fulfill multiple purposes within the Indian medical education system. It not only acts as a qualifying examination for final year MBBS students but also serves as a licentiate exam, enabling individuals to practice modern medicine in India. Additionally, the NExT plays a crucial role in the merit-based admission process for postgraduate courses.
NExT is aimed at streamlining and standardising the evaluation process for aspiring postgraduate medical professionals in India. Also, the NExT acts as a licentiate exam, serving as an essential qualification for individuals seeking to practice modern medicine in India.
Among other roles, NExT is also expected to act as a merit-based admission process to postgraduate courses. This merit-based approach is said to ensure that deserving and competent individuals get fair opportunities to pursue specialised medical field in the country.
NExT Eligibility
(i) All undergraduate medical students pursuing the degree of MBBS in all Medical Colleges as approved by the National Medical Commission through the Medical Assessment and Rating Board as well as the Undergraduate Medical Education Board.
(ii) All Foreign Medical Graduates approved by the National Medical Commission for the purpose of obtaining licence to practice medicine as a registered medical practitioner in India and for enrolment in the State Register or the National Register, as the case may be in such manner as may be specified by regulations.
(iii) Any other person with a Medical Degree for purposes such as pursuing an academic course, observership or any other purposes as may be specified and approved by the National Medical Commission through due notification or regulations from time to time
National Exit Test: Exam Pattern
The NExT shall comprise two separate examinations called ‘Steps’.
NExT Step 1
• It will be a theoretical examination conducted in Computer Based Test (CBT).
• The examination will consist of six papers covering subjects of MBBS/Final MBBS.
• There is no restriction to the number of attempts to appear in the NExT Step 1.
NExT Step 2
• It will be a practical/clinical and viva voce examination covering seven clinical subjects/disciplines.
• The examination will be held in person/live by the respective state Health Universities/ Institutions following the standards and guidelines provided by the Commission.
• There is no restriction to the number of attempts to appear in NExT Step 2 provided the candidate has passed both NExt Step 1 and NExT Step 2 examinations within 10 years of joining MBBS course.
When will NExt be implemented?
The All India Institute of Medical Science (AIIMS) is expected to conduct the National Exit Test (NExT) from 2024. However, an official confirmation in this regard is awaited.

  1. What is the objective of NExT exam?

    The objective of NExT is to bring in uniformity in the summative evaluation across the country with reference to the minimum common standards of education and training of a medical graduate.
  2. What is the minimum passing marks in NEXT Step 1?

    The minimum marks for passing will be 50% or half of the maximum possible Raw for NExT Step 1.
  3. Who will conduct the NExT Exam?

    The All India Institute of Medical Sciences, AIIMS Delhi is expected to conduct the NExT exam from 2023. However, an official confirmation is yet to be made in this regard.
  4. Will there be any negative marking in NExT exam?

    No, NExT will be a qualifying exam and there will be no negative marking.
  5. What will happen if you are failed in NExT Step 1?

    Those candidates who have failed in one or more subjects will be required to appear in the NExT Step 1 Supplementary Examination.
