What is a Hyper intelligent child?, By Ayla Nordkamp, Notre Dame School

It’s also worth noting that while giftedness can provide certain advantages, it can also bring unique challenges, such as social isolation or difficulty finding appropriate educational opportunities. Therefore, it’s important to support the holistic development of all children, regardless of their level of intellectual ability.

Hyper intelligent children may face a number of challenges, despite their advanced thinking abilities. Some potential problems that hyper intelligent children may encounter include social isolation, boredom, high expectations, emotional maturity and friendship issues. Hyper intelligent children may find it difficult to relate to their peers who are not at the same intellectual level, which can lead to social isolation and loneliness. If hyper intelligent children are not challenged intellectually, they may become bored and disengaged in the classroom, this can lead to underachievement or even behavioural problems. Gifted children may have a tendency towards perfectionism, which can lead to anxiety and stress and the high expectations from parents and teachers can put a lot of pressure on them, which can also contribute to anxiety and stress issues. Hyper intelligent children may have advanced cognitive abilities but still lack emotional maturity and may struggle with emotional regulation. They may also struggle with finding peers and mentors who can challenge and support them intellectually, which can lead to a sense of isolation and lack of direction.

It’s important to provide extra support and resources to hyper intelligent children to help them navigate these potential challenges as sometimes it can be very overwhelming for them. Therefore, it is important that parents provide  opportunities for exploration, experimentation, and discovery to keep their child happy and push them to their true potential.
