What If?: Spider-Man Sets Up the Kingpin’s Brutal Revenge
As Spider-Man: The Spider’s Shadow comes to a close, it ends on an ominous note that sees the Kingpin plotting his revenge against Peter Parker.
WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for Spider-Man: Spider’s Shadow #5, available now from Marvel.
The finale of the latest incarnation of Marvel’s long-running What If…? series has twisted one of the most iconic stories of Spider-Man’s career into an absolute nightmare, as Peter Parker’s original tenure with the symbiote suit took several dark turns in Spider-Man: Spider’s Shadow #5 by Chip Zdarsky, Pasqual Ferry, Matt Hollingsworth and VC’s Joe Sabino Thankfully, even the global threat posed by the Venom symbiote and its army prove to be nothing that Peter Parker and his allies can’t overcome.
While being freed from the symbiote’s clutches is certainly something worth celebrating, other nefarious forces are plotting Spider-Man’s next downfall. In his Venom-induced rampage, the hero made a more vicious enemy of Wilson Fisk than ever before. Now that Spider-Man’s secret identity is out, there is nothing stopping the Kingpin from unleashing a whole new breed of Carnage on Peter Parker’s world.
By effectively trading places with Peter via an image inducer of Reed Richard’s own design, the Human Torch was able to coax the symbiote into bonding with him and used that golden opportunity to go supernova. This proved more than enough to bring the reign of terror to an end, but doing so tragically cost Reed his life, leaving a hole in the Fantastic Four’s roster that only Spider-Man could fill. But after sustaining serious injuries from the Venom-possessed Spider-Man and watching the actions’ effects on his city, Wilson Fisk is disgusted by the fact that his enemy is now proudly parading himself as a champion of the people once more. Luckily enough for the Kingpin, he no longer merely has to watch, now that he has a symbiote of his very own.
Wesley, the Kingpin’s longtime confidant, has just presented him with another symbiote found in the aftermath of the final battle. With jagged yellow eyes and a deep red hue, the obvious assumption to be made is that this is none other than a new version of Carnage. The bloodthirsty offspring of Venom that first appeared in 1991’s Amazing Spider-Man #345 by David Michelinie and Mark Bagley, and it’s become one of Spider-Man’s most formidable foes in its own right. While there isn’t any guarantee that this is the same symbiote, that may not even matter considering Fisk’s own seething hatred that he could easily imprint on it.
When he was last seen in this series, Wilson Fisk was assumed dead after Spider-Man dealt out a haymaker punch that looked to have decapitated the Kingpin. As revealed that devastating blow only left Fisk missing half of his face — something that his doctors are hoping the symbiote could repair. Of course, if the Kingpin does bond with this symbiote, healing his own wounds isn’t the only thing he will have planned.
While Spider’s Shadow has ended for now, this ending hints at how a follow-up series could see the Kingpin bond with Carnage to create one of the most menacing threats Spider-Man ever had to face in any reality.
