What If…? Design Cover Reveals the Secrets of Miles Morales’ Wolverine Look

A concept art cover for What If… Miles Morales reflects the tragic events that turned a variant of the Spider-Verse star into Wolverine.

A concept art-style cover for Marvel’s upcoming What If…? series exposes the meaning behind Miles Morales’ Wolverine attire.

In March, What If… Miles Morales puts a new spin on the Spider-Verse star by turning his variants into costumed crusaders reminiscent of other superheroes. For the book’s second installment by writer John Ridley and artist Farid Karami, one of Miles’ variants undergoes a tragic series of events that turns him into Wolverine. An alternate cover for the issue sheds some light on this all-new Wolverine’s attire, as designed by Paco Medina. The “Design Variant Cover” shows Miles in a suit that mixes elements of Logan’s costume from John Cassaday’s Astonishing X-Men with the color scheme of Miles’ Ultimate Spider-Man look. Furthermore, Medina’s art integrates both a Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse-inspired sweatshirt and a mask evocative of Wolverine’s classic cowl, connecting the young hero to two of his most well-known counterparts.

Each issue of What If… Miles Morales explores a different world from Marvel’s Multiverse and its corresponding variant of Miles, with a rotating cast of writers and artists tasked with telling the tales of each hero. The series’ debut issue takes place in a reality where Miles never got bitten by a radioactive spider and instead took the Super Soldier Serum to become Captain America. The issue also integrates Miles’ longtime ally Tiana Toomes into its lore, putting her in a costume reminiscent of Sam Wilson’s Captain America.

While What If… introduces new incarnations of Miles, the original hero will be going back to where his story began — the Ultimate Universe. Though Earth-1610 supposedly merged with the mainstream Earth-616 in Secret Wars, Marvel has shown fleeting glimpses of the reality over the years that suggest it still exists, albeit without Miles. The cover to March’s Miles: Morales #36 suggests Miles and his clone, Shift, will pass through the Ultimate Universe while becoming adrift with space and time. However, their journey may be a one-way trip, as the issue teases that the Assessor’s actions impede the hero’s return.

Outside of the multiple Miles’ adventures, a different side of the Spider-Verse will be the centerpiece of Spider-Gwen: Gwenverse. Written by Tim Seeley and drawn by Jodi Nishijima, the story follows Gwen Stacy, aka Ghost-Spider, as she teams up with her counterparts, who have become Wolverine, Captain America, Thor and Captain Marvel in their respective realities. As part of its promotion for Gwenverse, Marvel is releasing a series of variant covers across its February titles that combine Gwen with different X-Men.
