The Washington Football Team signed Ryan Fitzpatrick to be its new starting quarterback during the 2021 NFL offseason. The team was hoping the 39-year-old veteran would help stabilize Washington’s quarterback room, which had been in flux for many years.

However, Fitzpatrick’s reign as starter lasted less than one half of Washington’s Week 1 game against the Chargers. He took a hard hit from Uchenna Nwosu on a first-down play and was slow getting up.

What is Ryan Fitzpatrick’s injury?

Fitzpatrick is dealing with a hip subluxation. A hip subluxation occurs when the femoral head — the “ball” that connects your leg to your hip — is not fully in the socket. It’s not a full dislocation, but it can cause limited range of motion and if not treated, can turn into a full dislocation, per NationwideChildrens.org.

How long is Ryan Fitzpatrick out?

Fitzpatrick will be out for 6-8 weeks as a result of the injury, as ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports. Washington placed him on IR while he recovers from the injury.

Who is Washington’s starting quarterback?

Taylor Heinicke will serve as the starter with Ryan Fitzpatrick sidelined.

Heinicke has an 0-2 record and has completed 62.5 percent of his passes for 895 yards, four TDs and four interceptions during his career. The 28-year-old is best known for starting Washington’s 31-23 playoff loss to the Buccaneers during the 2021 NFL playoffs. He had a memorable touchdown run to cut Washington’s deficit to two in the third quarter.

Kyle Allen will back up Heinicke. Allen started four games for Washington last year before a broken leg prematurely ended his season. Kyle Shurmur, son of Broncos offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur, joined Washington’s practice squad to provide extra depth at the position.
