What Does Revenge Look Like for The Scarecrow?

The Scarecrow has finally resurfaced, hellbent on getting revenge. The question is: What does he intend to do?

WARNING: The following article contains spoilers from Detective Comics #1055, on sale now.

After finally resurfacing in Detective Comics #1055 (by Mariko Tamaki, Amancay Nahuelpan, Jordie Bellaire, Ariana Maher), the Scarecrow made his intentions very clear: He wants revenge. What’s uncertain is how he intends to go about it and upon whom he intends to reap his vengeance. Gotham City as a whole is one possibility, it’s been shown that Scarecrow is capable of nearly destroying the city with some subtle manipulations.

The more likely candidate though is the Bat-Family. They had a direct hand in ruining his latest plan and there are a good number of them in the building. Even worse, most of them are injured or trapped.

The last time Scarecrow was seen, his hopes to prove his theory about the fear state, a kind of emotional crucible that supposedly made people stronger if they overcome mass terror, was dashed by Batman and his allies. This wasn’t just some random plot though, this was a dream that Scarecrow has held onto since before he was even the Scarecrow. He worked hard to get all the pieces into the right places and genuinely believed that what he was doing was good for everyone. Instead, that dream died just on the cusp of culmination. Even for someone as coldhearted as Scarecrow, that had to be a blow.

So it’s no surprise he would want revenge. The Bats seems like the best target for this, especially given that a majority of them are in the building and weakened. Motive and opportunity created the perfect moment for his return. Given that when achieving his dream he nearly destroyed a city, what could vengeance for that shattered hope look like?

The circumstances suggests that he’s going to kill the Bat-Family one by one and while he is almost certainly going to do that, it seems a little too quick for someone as sadistic as the Scarecrow. The more likely option is that he has some plan to make them suffer before they die. It isn’t just the Bat-Family that has attracted his attention, he could have laid any trap for them at any point to take his shot. Something about the Arkham Tower told the Scarecrow that this was the perfect place to ambush them.

It could have been the isolating nature of the tower. The idea of a mystery treatment curing the madness of its many dangerous inmates seemed like a ludicrous idea, Scarecrow probably knew that it was only a matter of time before that timebomb went off. While a tower full of murderers hunting the Bat-Family does give him the perfect opportunity, it would not provide him with the time needed to exact his revenge, especially given the fact that the police had surrounded the building.

Which leaves only one other thing that might have drawn Scarecrow in: Psycho Pirate. He either knew or suspected what the “treatment” here really was and intended to take it for himself once the opportunity presented itself. If Scarecrow got ahold of the medusa mask, he would be more dangerous than ever, no longer requiring technology or toxin when he can just induce an irresistible amount of fear into whoever he chooses. It would be the perfect way to permanently break the bats and give Scarecrow a new weapon to escape with once his vendetta is satisfied.
