What are green number plates?

Transport Secretary Grant Shapps confirmed the move in June 2020, under plans to drive a green economic recovery.

The plates are identifiable by a green flash on the left-hand side and are available for zero-emission vehicles only.

As part of the government’s plans, £12million has been allocated for research into the zero-emission market to develop greener vehicles and help improve vehicle charging technology.

In a further boost to the environment, the plates are also 99% recyclable and are more environmentally friendly than traditional acrylic plates.

How much do green number plates cost?

The green plates cost around £40 for both front and rear although they can be bought individually if needed.

Prices vary depending on where they are bought.

Halfords is currently selling the pair of plates for £36.

  • Front plate (white) only – £18
  • Rear plate (yellow) only – £18
  • Pair of plates – £36

Which cars have green number plates?

Green licence plates can be used on all-electric vehicles (EV).

Drivers are encouraged to make the switch to electric vehicles through the introduction of green number plates.

The plates will make it easier for cars to be identified as zero-emission vehicles, helping local authorities design and put in place new policies to encourage people to own and drive them.

Initiatives could include cheaper parking and cost-free entry into zero-emission zones where those with a green number plate will be recognised as eligible.

Where can I get a green number plate from?

The green plates can be purchased online on sites such as Amazon or at high street stores like Halfords.

Anyone wishing to change their plates will need to bring your V5 logbook with you for proof of ownership and vehicle eligibility.

Halfords say the plates will be ready to collect the next working day.
