What about Virat Kohli? Fans slam Ganguly for selectively praising Shubman Gill
The highly-publicised feud between Indian cricket legends Virat Kohli and Sourav Ganguly seemed to have reached a peaceful resolution. The two former Indian skippers earlier buried the hatchet and shook hands, putting an end to the ‘no handshake’ saga. However, it appears that fans have now unearthed a new chapter in their rivalry, sparked by a tweet shared by Ganguly.
Amid an exhilarating double-header in the IPL 2023, during which three remarkable centuries were scored by Cameron Green, Virat Kohli and Shubman Gill, Ganguly took to Twitter to applaud the outstanding quality of the tournament. However, fans were quick to scrutinise the tweet.
While the details of the feud were not explicitly mentioned in the news report, it is evident that the sour history between the two icons has contributed to the heightened sensitivity surrounding any public interaction involving them. The resurfacing of their rivalry on social media further reinforces the passion and loyalty of cricket enthusiasts in India.
Ganguly, in his tweet, praised Shubman Gill but did not specifically mention King Kohli.
The tweet shared by Ganguly, which praised the standard of the IPL, appeared to have triggered a reaction from fans who were quick to analyse its underlying implications. Although no direct confrontation occurred between the two players this time, the incident serves as a reminder that their previous clashes have left a lasting impact on fans’ perceptions and interpretations of their interactions.
Fans, on the other hand, did mention Kohli as a part of the context. “The script was in their hands & both knew How to go about it. One took 61 balls while the other managed it in just 51. The difference between the Victor & the Vanquished. Now for me that defines the changing face of T20s,” wrote one of them.
Another fan wrote, “U cud have mentioned Kohli as well. He also played very fantastic (sic).” “Kohli also score…. Say some word about kohli,” wrote another.
When Twitter users kept complaining why there was no word for Kohli, one of them defended Ganguly by saying, “Read the tweet properly. Two stunning knocks in two halves. First half is for Kohli , second half is for shubman. He did acknowledged kohli’s innings too. Shubman is new , up and coming compared to Kohli. So he took his name separately to applaud (sic).”
