Wham! and Mariah Carey close to knocking LadBaby off number 1 spot
Wham! and Mariah Carey could be putting a stop to LadBaby’s campaign for the coveted Christmas number one spot.
George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley’s Last Christmas has reportedly narrowed the gap in the race by more than 3,000 units overnight.
The development came amid the Official Charts Company data release that was unveiled this morning ahead of the imminent UK’s Official Christmas Number One 2022 revelation.
A first-ever Christmas number one single for Wham! could be feasible if the current streaming momentum holds up for the band.
On Monday their festive tune sat just 13,000 chart units behind LadBaby’s Food Aid – having added a further 8,500 units overnight to the Nottingham YouTuber’s 5,100.
The race is nowhere near over as more streaming data will arrive later this week that could fast-track the duo to the top of the charts in no time.
Bringing up third, today’s figures also placed Queen of Christmas Mariah in the running to claim her first ever seasonal number one.
She closed the gap to Wham! and came in just a little over 600 units behind the pair of hitmakers.
The front-runner is no stranger to the number one spot and this year aims to break records with five consecutive festive soundtracks should they claim top spot in 2022.
Mark Hoyle and his wife Roxanne – the duo behind the online pseudonym – have become known for smashing out instant Christmas hits over the years and are both hoping their latest effort food Aid will be no different.
Teaming up with Elton John and Ed Sheeran, LadBaby soared to the top of the charts with Sausage Rolls for Everyone to beat out talent in 2021.
Further down in the running, last year’s masterminds Ed and Elton’s Merry Christmas claimed fourth place while Stormzy’s soft ballad Firebabe inched closer to song number five.
YouTube group The Sidemen and their viral hit Christmas Drillings also rose a further six places overnight.
The internet sensation’s track was written with JME and came about as part of a video challenge that saw the group’s members split into two teams to produce a Christmas hit.
Artists and listeners alike have four full days left to offer their final push before the Christmas Number One victor is finally revealed.
