Weston McKennie’s dad posts strange Leeds farewell message featuring Harambe

Weston McKennie’s dad left Leeds United fans perplexed with his bizarre social media message on Sunday evening. The on-loan Juventus midfielder struggled to get going at Elland Road, and a permanent move now appears to be off the cards after the club’s Premier League relegation.

McKennie was seen as a significant coup for the Whites when he signed on loan in January. The 24-year-old arrived in England with serious pedigree, having risen through the ranks with Bundesliga side Schalke before spending four seasons at Italian giants Juve.

Despite demonstrating a decent eye for goal on the international stage with the United States, McKennie’s loan spell with Leeds was broadly unproductive as he came up with just one assist and no goals over 19 top-flight appearances.

On Sunday, he was even brought into the firing line by his own fans, who directed cruel chants towards the American during a 4-1 defeat to Tottenham that sent Leeds tumbling down to the Championship.

Shortly after the final whistle, McKennie’s father took to social media to deliver a message to Whites fans, with the content suggesting that his son’s association with the club is effectively over. “All the best to LUFC,” he wrote on Twitter.

“For those who supported Weston in a hostile environment you have my respect! For those who failed to remember it’s a team sport you live to fight another day [prayer emoji].”

@SchmegeI wrote: “Mr. Mckennie I think you quoted the wrong tweet.” Meanwhile, @mattob40 added: “A lot to unpack here.”

McKennie started the defeat to Spurs but was substituted in the second half. Only time will tell where the midfielder’s career takes him next after falling out of favour in Turin, where he is under contract until 2025.
